HRW Mobile Video Kit

The Human Rights Watch Mobile Video Kit allows researchers to make high resolution video recordings with professional-quality audio using a lavaliere microphone and wired audio monitoring.

⚠️MONITORING AUDIO WITH WIRELESS HEADPHONES IS NOT RECOMMENDED AND WILL OVERRIDE THE MICROPHONE RECORDING  ENTIRELY⚠️

The kit includes…

  1. A lavaliere mic for smartphones

  2. A “dual-input” adapter allowing users to input up to two microphones while simultaneously listening with headphones (when possible).

  3. A smartphone-compatible 20 foot extension cord

  4. An Apple-Brand headphone to lightning adapter (please be sure this adapter is a genuine Apple product, as generic versions often do not work)

In addition to the kit, you will need a pair of headphones or earphones and an iOS app to monitor audio.

Monitoring Audio While Recording Video
At the time of this writing, there is no way to monitor audio while creating a video recording in iOS without purchasing paid professional video recording app.

If this feature is important to you, we currently recommend the the MoviePro app, which can be purchased for a one-time fee of $7.99 USD. When using MoviePro, there is no need to adjust settings when plugging in and monitoring an external microphone — just plug the mic and headphones into your Rode adapter/splitter and MoviePro will sense the mic/headphones automatically.

If you prefer avoiding an app purchase, a manual work-around is to position the external microphone, record an audio sample and listen to it after recording.
