Image files are capable of storing important information in their metadata, such as who created a file, and when and where it was produced. In some cases this metadata is created automatically by a device, such as a smartphone, or added manually by a user in software programs like Adobe Photoshop or Bridge.

Because this data may be sensitive and reveal information about sources, HRW staff must remove metadata from files before publishing them on hrw.org, or uploading them to the internet. This guide outlines ways to remove metadata using tools that are installed by default on Windows and Mac operating systems. 

 

 

Remove metadata using Windows

Removing metadata from files in Windows can be done using the Properties tab in the Windows Explorer. To remove metadata:

1. Right click the file you would like to alter and choose, Properties.

2. In the Details tab, choose Remove Properties and Personal Information. Click "OK".

1. Open the image using the Preview application and choose Edit > Select All or ⌘A

3. In the File menu, choose New from Clipboard or ⌘N

4. Create a name for your new file, select JPEG as the Format and click Save
